will not let this day go by without the thought of the folks that lost their lives in a terrorist attack on our own home soil in 2001. No special anniversary, no flag waving, just a moment of reflection. In my mind the situation remains unresolved and though it's not an issue on the front burner, there are folks that still hurt everyday.

So here's my moment of silence......

Earl -

I apologize to you and the other forum members who read this for my part in poisoning what started with your deeply appreciated original post.

Earl, WT, dire, hippie, jg, BD, JOTS, Rob and everyone else (almost) - please accept my apologies. I lost 11 friends at the Pentagon 8 years ago and this nerve is still very, very raw.

there was nothing wrong with your post imho. Thank you for your years and years of service to our great country and prayers to the families of those friends and comrades you lost on that horrible day.

Rick - 'real and regular' is a pretty good description of the kind of guy you are. I know I took to calling you Namor (still recall with pleasure your descriptions of life onboard a submarine) but in the end he's just comicbook - you're the real deal. It's good to have you here.

No apologies needed. the postings of true patriots and freedom lovers moved me almost to tears. If it wasn't for the efforts of the US, and (to a lesser extent) Britain we wouldn't have the freedom to post anything, and its not about politics or left wing or right wing, its about mans respect of his fellow man. As has been posted here numerous times before:

"I disagree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it"?

On this sad anniversary God Bless America

Mando: We all lost something that day, and we all found something as well. Your apologies are never necessary, you've earned the right to your opinion in my eyes and in my heart. Right now I can't think of anyone I'd rather have my back.

As for the rest of the dust-up, I may plead a slight mea culpa, having foresight enough to guess what was coming. Easy as trapping possums, when you set a trap for coon. I was however offended at the lack of civility from the frog prince, dropping in with total disregard for the topic at hand. The direction the ensuing pandemonium would take was anybody's guess. All I can say is "rapture."

My best thread ever, and truer colors have never been shown, in every regard.

I still have friends I served with in the 1st Armor Div. as well as 1st Cav and can speak honestly about brothers in arms. At times I feel guilty that I left them to continue the fight.
Its a cold heartless soul that can take a day of reflection and grief and turn it to be about them and their europeon election (WTF) clueless I guess as to the disipline and sacrafice needed to keep the world safe from terror, despots and the others of the same ilk.
The same praises can be said as Earl or WT said about our first responders.
Pay no mind I 'm sure the fallen would understand and instead of an apology please accept my sincere thank you

Hey, no apologies to me. I owe you thanks for your service.

I apologize for having messed up Earl's post by addressing Skies. Lesson learned. I thought Earl's original post was a sincere and poignant reminder of today, a day for which I also carry deep personal scars (as do most people I know). In fact, my wife works at the Naval Postgrad School here in Monterey with several folks who colleagues that day. Whatever your politics, pretty callous to dump crap on a simple rememberance of those lost and thanks for those who serve. Sorry for part in mucking up the waters here.

Thanks to Earl and the rest of you, I will not hesitate to utter my two cents. Several times the terrorists said - for a long time - "the enemy" World Trade Center had to go down. It housed the pulse of the international financial systems. Please, may these nameless others rest in peace — all the little people that needlessly got killed that day: maintenance people, janitors, security guards, waiters and waitress, line cooks, and their peers - and all these families.

Many good people who worked relentlessly at ground-zero those days - such as firefighters, construction jocks, rescuers - are suffering and dying today because they inhaled all that haz-waste shit there. Even after these tiny extremely harmful particulates finally settled to the ground, they kept getting re-suspended because the destroyed rubble was being constantly moved around. Other times particulates are being wind-driven into the air. This went on, day-after-day, over and over, until this stuff was "all gone."

[political comment of sorts: was thinking this morning of how this date doesn't get the coverage/respect that 12/7/41 does, in spite of all the early comparisons...at least out West hereabouts...sad. Not sure if it's because of the "complex" follow up to the event, in which we are not all happy with the "solution" or what...

Sorry, really just meant to be an observation some eight yrs later...moment of silence now: ]

...Yep, a testament to our resilience, get up, dust off and get on with life as usual. Eight years ago it surely felt like a "Day of Infamy." Amazing how quick we tend to forget, but this is a lesson that needs to stay in our memory, lest we find ourselves repeating it.

Not to mention keeping a light shining on our "first responders" for their often unsung duty and those that continue to go after the bastards that brought this on us.

I wanted to make mention of it here, as if nothing else, even in our heated political disagreements, most have shown themselves to be passionate Americans. Something that often gets overlooked as we joust with one another over politics and policy.

I had a cousin that was a police officer and another one that was a fireman--they were both about my age. While neither one was injured that day, they both responded that morning and neither was the same afterwards.

As a child, my family would return to NY to visit our extended family. My grandfather used to take us kids to the tourist-y attractions, including the Towers. I always wonder how many grandfathers were headed to the observation deck with their grandkids that morning when the planes hit.

Thank you, Mando, and the rest of you who have served.

God Bless.

I often "lurk" here and don't jump in to anything but threads about music because I am too lazy to think too hard about the really complex issues of our day. However I read this thread and skies' post and all the fallout and I feel the need to chime in with my two cents.

Thanks to you Earl for reminding me to pause during my day to say a quiet thanks to those whose sacrafice to make my days easier and safer. Servicemen and women, police, firefighters etc..........Also at your urging I did stop to quietly contemplate for a moment the fate of those people like me who were going about their day raising a family and making a life who were unfair victims of a "political statement."

Skies here are my thoughts on your contribution to the thread...........I did not see anyhere that anyone was trying to convert your politics,(naive or simply antagonistic though they are) and all I saw you do was piss on everyone just because you could. Why try to hurt someone who was going out of his way to do something that was just nice and had no political or moral agenda? For that you prove yourself to be a flamming asshole.

For the rest of you...I hope that as you reflect on the day you can find peace if you need it or help others to find peace if you are in such a position.

"It's a hand-me-down, the thoughts are broken
Perhaps they're better left unsung
I don't know, don't really care
Let there be songs to fill the air

Ripple in still water
When there is no pebble tossed
Nor wind to blow

Reach out your hand if your cup be empty
If your cup is full may it be again
Let it be known there is a fountain
That was not made by the hands of men"

Chuck, Thanks for the sentiment, in fact I was awake for several hours before I recognized the date, and frankly felt ashamed of myself. Then I saw no one had made mention of it here, which was just as sorry as my own forgetful fluff.

Fact is, we too often not only enjoy, but flaunt and test our freedom at the expense of others. Every once in a while we really really need to take a moment to think about those that are in harms way for us, or worse gave their last breath acting on our behalf.

I'm glad you took the time to speak up and join in more often.

My best,

Earl.

As I think someone else already noted (i'm coming late to this thread) i also stand at opposite ends of the political specrtrum from Earl, but I absolutely applaud his non-political and sincere call for a moment of reflection on a date that is sad not just for Americans, but for any civilized peoples who believe killing innocents for any reason--and especially in the name of self-righteous fanaticism and hatred--is an evil the world could do without.

and I'm not one for piling on (I almost always take the side of the underdog if there's just cause), but honestly, Skies, even if I could excuse the insensitivity of trampling on what was a heartfelt and non-confrontational post by Earl, you lost any and all serious consideration or sympathy when you ranted that you don't believe Bin Laden and his cronies had anything to do with 9/11.

C'mon, man. Facts is facts, OK? There are bad people in the world, and these guys slaughtered 3,000 people who were just trying to live their lives. I despise Bush and his minions probably as much as you do, but you can't blame them for things they didn't do....when you do that, you diminish the moral authority to call them on the stuff they truly deserve to be punished for.

And again, all Earl was trying to do was acknowledge those who gave their lives 8 years ago trying to save others. There's nothing wrong with commending that kind of bravery and self-sacrifice.

Better said, GC...I was attempting to articulate something along those lines. The point with BD's relatives, or any service men or women, is not that they might be war mongers (because they just as well might be pacifists thrust into a situation they'd just as soon not have been), it's the fact that when it comes down to it, those folks in WWI (or wherever) took the risks they did for the person to the left or the right of them, and for that, the morality of the larger enterprise is moot...their sacrifices can be appreciated independent of it...

Earl and I are often on opposite sides of the fence when it comes to politics, but NO MATTER what your politics, a moment of remembrance for lives lost is appropriate and thanks to servicemen and women as well - serving now like those in my family that died on French soil in WWI.

yeah, teeth are still there somewhat; they are just selective now rather than chomping upon any old stray that happens to come around.

This evening finds me well enough, and I hope it does you too, Don. To be honest, it's been a rocky road lately and I've come scarily close to losing the trail entirely - when I get my inefficient self together I'll email you about that. Stay cool, my friend, there may be some who don't appreciate it, but you're an inspiration.

No I care, but the point is that Earl simply asked for a moment to remember those who died and you had to create your typical bullshit. So again, FUCK OFF. And if you pay attention, I said WWI. My mother's maiden name is Bedard; we still have family in France, so don't lecture me asshole.

I am not entitled? And pray tell, where should I search for said "nobless oblige"; from you?

I've read your posts and I think everyone with an ounce of breath is entitled to tell you to go fuck yourself. So again, FUCK OFF. I lost dear friends on 9-11 whose politics were far from being in favor of Bush's foreign policy but they are not the ones who made the (false) connections b/w 9-11 and the subsequent war policy. They are the ones who left behind children and widows and friends that ache when they think about it, as they certainly MUST on this day. 8 years is simultaneously a blink of an eye and a lifetime.

I AM NOT RESPONSABLE FOR YOUR YOUR GRIEF !I didn"t take any part in what happened in 2001 ,and so stop walloing in this cope out attitude to dump resentment towards fthers who don't think as you do ! What is this bullshit ? We must all duplicate only what you think as righteous and everyone else shut up ? 30 years ago ,you ,deadheads would have been raising hell in america to stop wars ,ANY wars ,and now you demand tears from the world or else forbidden to talk ? You are getting old ,grumpy, and blind to the fact I am not your ennemy ,so quit that spite ,Bluedevil !

I don't care, they probably got shot in the back running away with croissants in their hands and cock on their breath.

Ok, I'm done... and I did not reply to her, I was talking to BD whom I have debated in the past but found generally reasonable and would probably have a beer with.

I was wondering this whole time why you were doing that... now I must say, thank you.

Though it very well may deteriorate further, and thus, stain Mr Earl's thread of kind words (sorry, E!), I must ask two questions.

First, what on Earth could compel you, of all people, to not step back and take a deep breath of quiet acknowledgement for BD's ancestors and their blood spilled on your own soil? Surely, whatever historical revisionist theories you subscribe to, the effort they provided in WWI can only be viewed with reverance and appreciation. Surely your French ancestors or fellow citizens only see it for the simplistic sacrifice it was...and I say that as one with deep respect for soldiers of France that perhaps more than any others paid the ultimate price with both their final stands ("They shall not pass") and their sane response to insane orders; to no longer "go over the top" in 1917 when others had yet to realize the absolute need to resist this horrific misplaced tactical policy.

Second, though I can only cringe at the possibilities, who do you think DID carry out the attacks on the WTC? Why would anyone question the role that others were more than happy to make public--as to their responsibility for it? JFK conspiracies are one thing, but it's just plain silly, as well as criminal, to deny what others want credit for...what's next, denial of the Holocaust?

That is where you are DEAD wrong skies...like it or not, YOU are the recepient of those that went before you...you can reject all that is warlike, and mean, BUT you cannot deny the sacrifice that people as frustrated and as convinced as YOU of the futility of war paid a price when it was their wives and daughters at stake. This happens; in spite of pacifists such as yourself, or myself for that matter, there has come a time when it was necessary, when taking one life prevented the taking of ten...a sad equation if ever there was one, BUT you have to accept the quotient that your French forebearers provided to you.

You can declare yourself divorced from all that was violent, all that was low and beneath you, but please, please: acknowledge those that like you, died when they'd rather have had a choice, rather have played Gandhi, but could not.

Sad...to be so disconnected from humanity. It's your divorce. Take your settlement and wear it proudly.

You owe no one anything, and thus you receive nothing.

Fair enough. But, take what rights you have right now, please, and return them to someone that will appreciate them. Those were not God given. They are wrought by the likes of the "men" you so disrespect.

Seriously.

I am entitled to my rights in France and you,W.Tell, you are not entitled to tell me what I should do with my rights !When I was in america ,you never cared once about my rights and not a single deadhead cared when i lost my kids .All too busy to grab your fun ,drugs and scores for decades ,yourather huddle with a warpack hoping you still belong somewhere ,but me Idon't need cluster mentality just to think I belong somewhere . Did you cry a singlr tear when my kids were ripped out of my life ? Did you ever bother to find out how many people died because of americans ,these last 50 years ,the world over ? Add it all up ,and it's legitimate I don't have a tear left for amercans who never had a tear for me and my kids either ! Go to hell all of you ,NA!

So much anger...

"dude"?

You really use that term in France, eh?

Take all your anger and channel it productively in Pacifist Literature and Demonstrations.

There are plenty to choose from. Instead of insulting everyone, do something proactive. Please let me know of your accomplishments in this arena, and not just those of consulting mindless drivel of conspiracist websites.

And, consider: How many deaths can be attributed to the inaction of those unwilling to step forward? Do that little exercise, and let me know...just lamenting violence doesn't let you off the hook...we are all in this together.

K, dude?

To be perfectly clear definitly :i met deadheads during 15 years ,and while they were copouts on any serious matters ,they also knew simply how to be fun and polite . The heaps of garbage ,the tons of hatreds I heard here proves without a doubt that listening to dead tapes cannot transmute trashy bullies into decent folks ,never ! Ship of fools (E.Powell)steams his resentments by killing innocent creature of the sea for fun ,and deserve to be recycled as fishes in many futur lives just to entertain some others as cruelly selfish as himself ! Shakedown street is another word foe Bluedevil :darkness blue from hate ,this hellish pathetic devil ,poke around ,he's got no heart ! William Tell is a coward ,never around should you need him ,but always first topromote himself cheaply on easy street ! Angular's as Bandito and a few others ,doing worthless jives for their bored petty lives, stil think dumly it's enough to hear same old GD tapes to amout to something among deadheads nowedays !Except deadheadmonte clearly creative in various way ,I cannot remember any worthy interesting individual here ! Even Direwolf has become a bore .Mandojammer ?Bof !Same old stuffy stuff for old dudes with nothing ne to say since the ice ages !Old bullies with wornout mindsets ,so tha' about what became of deadheads here ,after all ! What a pathetic joke !
